The story begins with the Three witches cackling about a man named Macbeth whilst Macbeth is in battle alongside King Duncan and he is shown being a dangerous and vicious warrior and fighting valiantly for his country and king. . As Macbeth is returning home from battle, he and his good friend Banquo come across the Three Witches. The Witches prophesize that Macbeth will be named Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland. Banquo complains that he is not involved in the prophecy and so the witches tell him that he will the father to a long line of future kings of Scotland.
An assistant to the king informs the King that the current Thane of Cawdor was a traitor and has been beheaded. Macbeth then takes up the title of Thane of Cawdor. Because the first part of the prophecy is fulfilled and Macbeth is the Thane of Cawdor, he believes that the prophecy is true, so he decides to wait around for something to happen for the next part of the prophecy to occur. But, Lady Macbeth, Macbeth's impatient and ambitious wife wants great things for him. So Lady Macbeth decides to stir the pot a bit, she convinces Macbeth to murder King Malcolm. Macbeth is reluctant at first but then he agrees to do the deed.
Lady Macbeth offers the guardsmen alcohol and they become drunk and pass out, she then smothers blood all over their clothing and daggers. Macbeth then sneaks in and murders King Duncan. The next morning, Macduff finds the dead Kings body, and is heavily distraught. Macbeth then rushes in and finds the bloodied guards, Macbeth falsely accuses the guards and executes them on the spot. The sons of King Duncan, Donalbain and Malcolm, find out what has happened and they leave Scotland to avoid Murder.
Macbeth is then named King and everything is going well for him, the prophecy is also fulfilled. But Macbeth is still worried about the part of the prophecy where it is said that Banquo will be father to a long line of Kings of Scotland, so he hires hit men to have one of his good friends murdered. Banquo is killed but his son, Fleance is able to escape. After this, Not much happens and Macbeth is feeling guilty about what he has done, and is being haunted by hallucinations and ghosts. Macbeth seeks help from the Three witches, They tell him three more prophesies. The first one is to be wary of Macduff, The second is that no man born of woman is going to hurt him, the third is not to worry until Birnam Wood's moves to Dunsinane.
Macbeth feels slightly relieved in that the second and third prophesies are basically impossible, but he is worried about the first one involving Macduff. So he decides to have Macduff's family killed off to scare him away. The citizens are beginning to get suspicious of Macbeth, and so Macduff and Malcolm visit the English King, Edward the Confessor. They construct a plan with the English men to save Scotland from the reign of Macbeth. Meanwhile, Lady Macbeth has also been having multiple hallucinations and jumps out a window to her own death.
Macduff and Malcolm arrive with their English army, they order their army to cut branches from the trees in Birnam Wood's for camouflage as they approach Macbeth's castle. This is where the third part of the prophecy becomes fulfilled and the soldiers sneak up to Macbeth's camouflage with the trees from Birnam Wood's. Everyone evacuates the castle. Except Macbeth, since he believes he is invincible. Macbeth uses this to his advantage and tells the enemy that he is invincible, so many soldiers perish to Macbeth. It is not until Macduff encounters Macbeth that he falls in battle. As Macbeth is offending Macduff, he mentions that he was delivered via C-Section and was not 'born'. Macduff realises that he was technically not 'born' of woman, which means he has the ability to slay Macbeth. Macbeth realises his mistakes and is beheaded by Macduff.
The story ends with Malcolm becoming the rightful King of Scotland and Macbeth's head is impaled on a pike.
